Standard bearer calls for greater exploitation of Cardiff economic zone
Cardiff is a tremendous success story that should be exploited much more by the wider city-region according to the former head of Standard Chartered, Lord Davies of Abersoch. Speaking at an Institute of Welsh Affairs conference in his capacity as the UK Minister for Trade, Investment and Small Business, Lord Davies took the opportunity to outline the strengths of the UK’s inward investment offer and highlighted a number of areas where the UK leads the world. These areas include mobile phone technology, ICT, higher education, financial and professional services, life sciences and composite technologies.

Asalus is developing three devices that will improve the safety and efficiency of laparoscopic surgery, the company said.

The £5m redesign, part of the airport's wider £15m investment strategy, has reached the planning stage and work could start later this year. BBC Drama Centre - new home for Dr Who and Casualty in the heart of Cardiff Bay
Plans have been unveiled by BBC Wales to build a new TV production centre to house dramas such as Doctor Who and Casualty. The broadcaster said work at a site in Roath Basin in Cardiff Bay could start within the next six months. Its director Menna Richards said the centre would bring together a range of different dramas. The BBC confirmed last year that the filming of Casualty would switch from Bristol to Cardiff. The drama centre plan is part of the BBC's commitment to double television network production from Wales by 2016.

New Campus Proposal for Cardiff University
The University has lodged plans for its proposed new campus development to give academics the space and facilities to tackle some of the world’s most important research issues. The masterplan application, outlining the proposed development of University-owned land next to Maindy Road, has just been submitted to Cardiff Council for determination.

£190k Investment in Cardiff University spin-out Medaphor
Fusion IP (AIM: FIP), the Cardiff university commercialisation company which turns university research into business, is pleased to announce that Medaphor, which has developed an advanced ultrasound training tool, has raised £190,000, including £75,000 each from Fusion and Finance Wales. Medaphor is developing a “virtual reality” ultrasound training device, called ScanTrainerTM, which combines high quality ultrasound images with world-class computer-based feedback and training. The product, which eliminates the current ultrasound training constraints of limited equipment, trainers and volunteers, can be applied to a number of different therapeutic areas.

Investment in Computing Excellence
A new £44m High Performance Computing (HPC) institute for Wales has been announced by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). HPC Wales, which will be delivered by Cardiff and Swansea Universities, will be funded by £10m from BIS’s Strategic Investment Fund (SIF), together with contributions from European funds, Higher Education in Wales and the private sector. The HPC institute will be based in two hubs at Cardiff and Swansea Universities, with additional centres at Aberystwyth, Bangor and Glamorgan universities. It will provide companies with access to supercomputing resources, and is expected to create more than 400 new jobs.

MSS GROUP ENTERS SUNDAY TIMES VIRGIN FAST TRACK 100
Cardiff based MSS Group has achieved a place in the 2009 Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100. The Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 league table ranks Britain's 100 fastest-growing private companies, based on sales growth over 3 years. MSS Group was founded by directors Bill Mayne (chief executive), Jonathan Jones, Jamie Davies and Robert Little in 2005, with its services ranging from industrial cleaning to asbestos testing in school and hospitals. For its financial year to the end of March, it posted sales of £7.36m – having grown on average 63% from 2006 when it reported revenues of £1.7m.

A technology-based incubator in Cardiff has won an international award. The @Wales innovation centre for digital companies has been awarded the best science-based incubator 2009 award by Science Alliance at its conference in Sweden.
